Community Service

"It is our task in our time and in our generation to hand down undiminished to those who come after us, as was handed down by those who went before us, the natural wealth and beauty which is ours"
                                                                       - John F. Kennedy

As lucky and as blessed that we are to be able to attend a university and get a good education it is important to give back to the community. As a club that promotes outdoor activities we like to serve our community through conservation of our natural parks. On this page you will find our future community service events as well as stories and pictures of past community service.

National Public Lands Day
Date: September 25, 2009
Location: Boston Mills Ski Resort 7100 Riverview Road in Peninsula
Description: The Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) had just purchased some new property from a private land owner who had a large stock of scrap metal. They hired a scrapper to haul off the metal and sell it for them. We loaded the scrap metal onto the truck for the park helping them not only clear the park of scrap but also earn the park extra money in the process. It was a great feeling to have accomplished so much.

Make A Difference Day
Date: October 2011
Location: Akron, OH
Description: Make a Difference Day is a huge event where Akron students volunteer their time to aid local businesses in whatever manner they need. On this day were were assigned to Asia Inc. an organization that reaches out to Asian immigrants and provides them with necessary services to help them incorporate more smoothly with the transition from Asia to America. They take in clothing donations and run a used clothing drive to help fund some of there events and provide the assistance that they do. We helped them to sort and organize these donations as well as helped them to clean out some of their building space to be utilized better. It was a great way to learn and communicate with others who devote their time to helping others.

Make A Difference Day
Date: October 2012
Location: Akron, OH
Description:  Make a Difference Day is a huge event where Akron students volunteer their time to aid local businesses in whatever manner they need. On this day we were assigned to Trinity Church. The Church takes in gently used clothing and has a clothing drive to not only provide discounted clothing to those in need but also to take in some funds to help run other services.  Were able to communicate with people who give their time to the church in order to aid others, it was a rewarding and educational experience.

Adopt-a-Trail
Date: April 2013
Location: Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Description: We aided the park service in maintaining some of the hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the National Park. We worked close with park volunteers who had donated their time every year for the past 30 years. We cleaned debris from the trail as well as cleaned out the drainage ditches accompanying the trails. The trails are now safer to use and now properly reflect the park and all that it stands for. It was eye opening to discuss all the work that our supervisors had seen done and done themselves over the year. It is  a side of the National Park that few have seen but is absolutely vital that it is performed for the continued use of out National Park.
